OF GOOD COURAGE
“Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight” (1 Chron. 19:13)
- “BE OF GOOD COURAGE.”
- A phrase about 61 times in the Bible (KJV).
- Used when people of God face their enemies or to do a great task.
- Hebrew means to be strong, obstinately devoted to the cause!—Not merely being “brave.”
- Can be of good courage if trust in God.
- “And let the Lord do that which is good in his sight.”
- Confidence in the Lord’s purposes—His always good.
- Do what we can, God does the rest!
- Coward not of good courage—Requires strength of character to be bold in the Lord!
- 1 Cor. 16:13—“quit you like men” (KJV).
- Be men!
- Judges 7:3—“Whoever is fearful and afraid…”
- Phil. 1:14—“..bold to speak the word without fear.”
- Not turn back!
- Jer. 1:9, 10—Jeremiah’s fear and God’s assurance.
- 2 Tim. 1:8—Timothy needed this.
- “LET US BEHAVE OURSELVES VALIANTLY.”
- Be strong!
- Demands strength to stand in the fight.
- 2 Tim. 2:3, 4.
- Strength as we derive from scripture—1 Pet. 2:2, 3.
- Strength as we derive from prayer.
- “FOR OUR PEOPLE, AND FOR THE CITIES OF OUR GOD.”
- A great military & patriotic speech.
- A reason to fight—Gives some purpose to it.
- Our spiritual purpose:
- Phil. 1:27—for the faith of the gospel.
- Jude 3—Earnestly contend for the faith.
- 2 Cor. 10:1-5—To overthrow all error and sin.
CONC.
- The incentive is great: encourages men to be strong because of the help of God.
